daisy chain

A monitor daisy chain connects multiple displays in sequence, with one monitor passing the video signal to the next. It can reduce the number of direct connections to the computer.

What “daisy chain” means on a monitor

A monitor with daisy-chain capability can pass a video signal through to another monitor. Instead of connecting every display directly to the computer, the computer connects to the first monitor, and the next display connects to an output on that monitor.

Daisy chaining is commonly associated with DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport and can also involve USB Type-C connections that carry video. The exact connection method depends on the product and its listed ports.

Why it matters

Daisy chaining can be useful for a multi-monitor desk because it may reduce the number of cables running back to the computer. It can also make the physical layout neater when the monitor provides the required input and output connections.

On MonitorFit, the product data includes monitors marked both “Daisy chain: Yes” and “Daisy chain: No.” That makes the capability flag useful when comparing models, but it does not by itself indicate picture quality, performance, or overall monitor quality.

When it matters—and when it does not

This feature matters when you want to connect compatible monitors in sequence from one computer connection. It is less important if you use one display, connect each monitor directly to the computer, or do not have a compatible video output and host device.

A “Daisy chain: Yes” label does not tell you how many monitors can be connected, which resolutions or refresh rates are supported across the chain, or whether the computer supports the required display technology. Those details remain product- and setup-dependent.

What to check on a product page

Look for:

The specific ports used for the chain, such as DisplayPort or USB Type-C.
A video output or downstream connection on the monitor, not just a video input.
Whether the computer or dock supports the required multi-display function.
Any stated limits for the number of displays, resolution, or refresh rate.
Whether the required cables are included. Some MonitorFit listings show “Daisy chain cable, DisplayPort, USB Type-C” under cables included, but that listing does not establish what every daisy-chain monitor includes.
Whether the product’s user controls or other features are relevant to your needs; a daisy-chain flag does not describe those features.
