DCI-P3
What DCI-P3 means
DCI-P3 is a colour gamut standard originally associated with digital cinema. In monitor specifications, it describes a range of colours that the display may be able to reproduce. DCI-P3 is wider than sRGB in several areas, so a monitor with meaningful DCI-P3 support can represent some more saturated colours than an sRGB-only display.
MonitorFit listings may show DCI-P3 as the stated colour gamut standard, or provide a separate figure such as “DCI-P3 coverage: 95%” or “DCI-P3 coverage: 98%”. The coverage percentage describes how much of the DCI-P3 colour space the monitor is reported to cover.
Why it matters to monitor buyers
DCI-P3 can be relevant when a monitor is used for cinema, video production, photography, design, or other work where a wider colour gamut is useful. It can also matter when comparing displays that otherwise have similar resolution and size.
For general office work, web browsing, and many games, DCI-P3 may be less important than factors such as text clarity, brightness, viewing comfort, refresh rate, or connectivity. The value of a wider gamut also depends on whether the software and content are designed to use it.
What the label does not tell you
DCI-P3 is a capability or coverage description, not a quality rating. A DCI-P3 label does not by itself establish that a monitor is accurately calibrated, has uniform colour across the panel, or displays every colour at the same brightness.
A coverage percentage also does not fully describe colour accuracy. It does not tell you the measurement method, the error level, whether the figure refers to gamut coverage or gamut volume, or how the display behaves in a particular colour mode. If a listing only says “DCI-P3” without a coverage figure or testing information, the extent of that support remains unknown.
What to check on a product page
Look for these details separately:
- Whether DCI-P3 is listed as the colour gamut standard or as a measured coverage figure.
- The stated DCI-P3 coverage percentage, if one is provided.
- Whether the same product also lists sRGB, Adobe RGB, or NTSC coverage.
- Any information about factory calibration, colour accuracy, colour modes, or the test conditions behind the figure.
- Whether the monitor offers a mode intended for the colour space you need.
Treat the listed coverage as one specification among several. It should not be used alone to infer overall picture quality or professional colour performance.
