HDR
HDR, or High Dynamic Range, describes a display’s ability to represent a broader range between dark and bright areas, along with HDR-compatible image and video content. On a monitor product page, it is a capability or format label—not a complete quality rating.
Why HDR matters when comparing monitors
HDR may be relevant if you watch HDR video, play games with HDR support, or create and review HDR content. It can help a compatible monitor show more detail across bright and dark parts of an image than standard dynamic range (SDR), depending on the monitor and the content.

What the HDR label does not tell you
An HDR support flag does not prove that a monitor delivers excellent HDR. It does not, by itself, specify the monitor’s brightness, contrast, color coverage, black-level performance, processing, or viewing experience. It also does not establish that every HDR format or HDR feature is supported.
Likewise, a technology label such as HDR10 or DisplayHDR 400 should be read as the stated technology or certification-related label only. It should not be treated as a substitute for checking the rest of the product specifications. If a listing uses a shortened or combined description, other details may remain unknown.
What to check on a product page
When HDR is important to your choice, check:
- Whether HDR supported is listed as Yes or No.
- Which HDR technology is named, if any.
- The monitor’s separate brightness, contrast, color, and panel specifications, where provided.
- Whether the input connections, operating system, and intended content source are suitable for the HDR use case; the HDR field alone does not establish full compatibility.
- Whether the listing includes an energy efficiency class or energy consumption (HDR) per 1000 hours. These are energy-related fields and do not measure HDR picture quality.
If a product page shows HDR support but does not provide the other relevant display details, treat the missing information as unknown rather than assuming a particular level of performance.
Nearby display concepts
SDR is the standard dynamic range baseline. Brightness, contrast, color gamut, and local dimming are separate display concepts that can affect how HDR content is shown, but none should be inferred from an HDR support flag alone.
