Adaptive Sync
What Adaptive Sync means
Adaptive Sync is a display feature that allows a monitor to adjust its refresh timing to better follow the changing output of a compatible graphics source. In a gaming setup, this can reduce visible tearing and make motion appear more consistent when frame output varies.
On MonitorFit product pages, you may see the feature listed as VESA Adaptive Sync support or Adaptive synchronisation. These labels identify a capability, but they do not by themselves describe how well the feature performs.
Why it matters for gaming monitors
Games do not always produce frames at a perfectly steady rate. When the graphics source and monitor refresh at different times, a moving image can show tearing or uneven pacing. Adaptive Sync is intended to help coordinate those timings, so it is most relevant to people choosing a monitor for PC gaming or other variable-frame-rate content.
It matters less if you mainly use a monitor for static work, reading, or video playback with a stable output. It is also only useful when the connected source, monitor input, and setup support the required variable-refresh behaviour.
What the label does not tell you
An Adaptive Sync entry is not a quality rating. “Yes” does not specify the supported refresh-rate range, the inputs that support it, the compatible graphics technologies, or how the feature behaves at particular frame rates. Those details may vary by product and may not be fully shown in a catalogue listing.
The label also does not establish a monitor’s overall motion quality. Response time, refresh rate, image processing, and other display characteristics remain separate considerations.
What to check on a product page
When comparing monitors, check:
- Whether Adaptive Sync is listed as supported, unsupported, or not specified.
- Whether the product page identifies a supported refresh-rate or variable-refresh range.
- Which connection inputs are associated with the feature, if that information is provided.
- Whether the monitor lists compatibility details for your graphics source.
- The monitor’s refresh rate and response-time specifications separately from Adaptive Sync.
If a listing only shows a capability flag, treat the remaining behaviour and compatibility details as unknown rather than assuming a particular result.
Nearby concepts
Variable refresh rate describes the broader approach of changing a display’s refresh timing. Refresh rate is the rate at which a monitor can update its image, while screen tearing is a visual effect Adaptive Sync may help reduce. Response time describes a different aspect of motion handling and should not be used as a substitute for Adaptive Sync.
